Pre-Trip Practical Info
Doubtful Sound weather changes fast and water is everywhere — even when it isn't raining. A short, layered packing list gets you through almost anything the fiord throws at you.
Before You Pack
Here's what to bring on your overnight cruise, what we have on board, and how to think about the basics. If you'd rather just ask, our reservations team is on the phone or email — details at the bottom.
Fiordland weather changes fast — bring layers. A warm fleece or midlayer, a waterproof outer shell, and light long-sleeve options for evenings on the boat. Even summer mornings on the fiord can be cool, and rain can arrive without warning.
Casual smart clothes for dinner are optional — most guests stay comfortable in their layers. Quick-dry fabrics are friendlier than cotton: they shrug off light rain and dry overnight if they do get damp.
Comfortable closed-toe shoes for the boat, plus a sturdier pair (light hiking shoes or grippy sneakers) for any shore landings. If you plan to kayak, bring something you don't mind getting wet — neoprene booties or old sneakers work well.
Soft slip-ons for the cabin are useful. Heels and dressy shoes are unnecessary; the boat is a working vessel and the deck is the dress code.
Yes — Fiordland is a temperate rainforest and gets more than six metres of rain a year. A waterproof jacket is essential, regardless of season. Quick-dry layers underneath help if you do get caught in a downpour.
We carry spare rain coats on board for guests who forget, but bringing your own means a better fit and one less thing to worry about.
Bring whatever camera you have. The light on Doubtful Sound is extraordinary, and modern phone cameras handle the landscape remarkably well. A small microfibre towel is useful for lens condensation in the mornings.
USB charging is available in every cabin. If you're a serious photographer, the wraparound windows in the top cabin and the open deck give you flexibility most boats can't.
Standard toiletries are provided in the cabins; bring any personal preferences plus regular medications in their original containers. Sunscreen and lip balm are worth packing — UV is strong even on cloudy days in Fiordland.
Seasickness pills are worth having if you're prone, though the inner sounds are well sheltered and most guests don't need them.
All meals, snacks, and hot drinks. Bedding and towels in every cabin. Kayaks, fishing gear, and dive equipment (diving by advance arrangement). Spare wet-weather gear if you need it. USB charging in every cabin.
You bring your clothes, your camera, and yourself — we handle the rest. If you have a specific need (CPAP machine, special dietary requirements, mobility considerations), tell us when you book and we'll have it sorted before you arrive.
